Spider Veins

Spider veins are small red, purple, and blue "threadlike" veins found on the surface of the skin. They usually resemble a spider's web hence the name spider veins. Spider veins are considered "cosmetic" therefore rarely is treatment covered by insurance.

Spider veins are generally an inherited condition when small capillaries dilate on the surface of the skin. There are larger vessels called reticular or "feeder" veins which are often a source for the spiders. Spider veins often worsen during times of hormonal shifts such as pregnancy or menopause or may occur with injury.

Spider veins may be successfully treated with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. Even with successful treatment many patients may require intermittent maintenance treatments due to the fact that their body may continue to produce new spider veins.
